Rock Star Triathlete Academy Member Ann Wins A Free Month of Membership!

Here’s Rock Star Triathlete Academy member Ann and here’s what she had to say:

Ben/Kerry,

My last race before I left Poland was the local sprint triathlon in nearby Lusowo.  The previous year, this was my first ever triathlon, so it was amazing to see how much I had improved and appreciate the experience and knowledge I’ve gained —  in that year, I did another sprint, an Olympic, and a HIM. Thanks for all your helpful tips on the forum and with the Gold Wings call.  Now I’m ready to tear up the US races!

Todd Wins A Free Month of Membership…For the Fourth Time (And You Can Too)!

Rock Star t-shirt

We just got this letter from Rock Star Triathlete Academy member Todd…

Hi Ben and Kerry,

Race season is in full swing, and last weekend I raced again, this time in my hometown of Calgary, Alberta.

The Chinook Triathlon Festival is an amazing event in Calgary, with both Olympic and Half Iron Distance races taking place on the same day. The day was cool but clear, and despite our typical brisk winds coming off the Rocky Mountains at this time of year, the weather was perfect for racing. The water was chilly – on par with Ironman Coeur d’Alene, and the winds made for a good headwind on the way out West and a fantastic tailwind on the way home.

I had a decent swim, a good bike and run to go under 2:30 by about a minute, which was my goal for the race. Best part was running down a fellow age grouper with 300m to go. I snapped this picture by the finish chute after the race. I’m always trying to recruit more Canadians into the Rock Star Triathlete Academy.

For the benefits of fellow Rock Stars, I’m follow the 36 week Ironman Intermediate Plan this year which has a racing block in May and June. After having done this last year, I can say from experience that there is no better way to get ready for your A race than to do a bunch of tune-up races to help you prepare. It’s a great way to practice fueling, transitions, and to meet others to train with in the future.

I race a Half Ironman next weekend, and then my racing block is done and prep time for Ironman Canada on Aug. 28th begins! Hope to see a few Rock Stars in Penticton – let me know if you’re coming up and we can meet.

Cheers, Todd

“Hi Ben and Kerry,

I had a blast at the 2011 Escape from Alcatraz race. It is a truly unique race, with jumping off the ferry and swimming in the bay, to the hilly bike with views of the Golden Gate Bridge, and the challenging run with a mixture of single track trail, stairs, and infamous Sand Ladder. I highly recommend this race for any Rockstars that have a few Olympics under their belt, as it is one that definitely puts you in the hurt locker a few times along the way.

I didn’t see any other Rockstar Triathletes, but was sure to wear my Rockstar jersey around during the course pre-ride and run on Saturday.

Good luck to all of you racing Coeur d’Alene in a few weeks! Send in some pictures!”

Here’s what Todd had to say:

I had a blast at a triathlon event that took place here in Calgary, Alberta this weekend. The TriCommitment Spinathon (www.tricommitment.com ) was held to support two local pro triathletes in their upcoming race seasons in the ITU and pro Ironman ranks. There were over 100 triathletes and cyclists on trainers for 5 hours, as various local coaches ran us through the spin sessions. I wore my Rockstar cycling kit, and got many comments and questions about what the Academy was. I managed to capture a photo of me in the middle of it all, complete with my “Movember” moustache…

Unfortunately, it was a sad day as well, as one of the pro triathlete we were supporting was Janelle Morrison (one of Canada top pro female Ironman athletes). Janelle was on her way from Penticton, BC (home of Ironman Canada) to Calgary when a minivan lost control and crossed the center line, hitting her head on. She was very badly injured, with multiple fractures and internal damage. The doctors and paramedics remarked that had she not been in such fine physical shape, she would not have survived the trip to the hospital.

The good news is that Janelle is now awake and recovering well from the multiple surgeries she underwent to repair her body. The best part of the day was when a webcam was set up in her room, and someone with a wireless laptop walked around the Spinathon so that Janelle could see everyone riding and say hello.

It was a remarkable day to show how the triathlete academy looks out for one another.

Cheers,

Todd

Get A Black Belt in Running

In some ways I am in a unique position. A fourth degree Black Belt/Instructor AND an endurance athlete. In studying both sports there are a lot of similarities both from a physical and psychology perspective.

So what are those parallels and what would someone have to do to earn a Black Belt in running?

Top 3 Tips For Riding A Triathlon Bike In Hawaii

We recently had a chance to sit down with Hawaii State’s top time trialist, Penn Henderson, to get his top 3 tips for riding a triathlon bike in Hawaii. This was good information for riding in *any* condition, but especially for hot and windy races. Here’s a special link to the video…

Does It Pay To Go Easy On The Bike During A Half-Ironman?

*full Half Ironman course gear and nutrition recommendations below this story

I admit it.

I’m a pretty proud guy and I like to pass people on my bicycle.

Especially during Half-Ironman triathlons, I get a huge rush chasing my competitors down like hunted rabbits and blowing by them. Many times, I’ll even sneak up within a few meters, chomp down a GU to get my crazy sugar high, then blast myself to extremely high heart rates just to demoralize whoever I’m passing. Eat my dust, homey.

And in the past, that strategy has served me fairly well.

Now don’t get me wrong: I’m not cycling my Half-Ironman bike split at an all-out 100% red-hot intensity, but in most of my Half-Ironman triathlons, I traditionally push myself very hard on the bike, respond to my competitors when they pass me by re-passing them and trying to leave them behind, and usually record one of the fastest amateur bike splits…

…then hold on for dear life on the run as my battered and slightly rubbery legs whimper from their Herculean effort on the bike.

But could I be cycling *too* hard?

Could I perhaps run faster or place higher by bicycling easier during a Half-Ironman, or “staying within my limits”?

Granted, I am a case study of just one, but I tried this different bike pacing strategy out in the recent Wildflower long course triathlon – a race at which I was also attempting to qualify for the ITU Long Course World Championships.

In other words, during the bike portion of Wildflower, I didn’t look at any “numbers on calves” and didn’t try to “ride down” other triathletes. I just checked my pride at the starting line, played the game within my physical boundaries, rode a conservatively aggressive pace, and never let my legs get that rubbery, intense burn I’ve gotten at all my other Half-Ironman triathlons.

Even on “Heartbreak Hill”, the notoriously killer part of the Wildflower course, I never let myself get to the point where I was “sucking air”, which I usually do during big grades or steep hills on Half-Ironman bike courses.

So it turned out that racing with this style (in atypically windy conditions), my bike split was nearly 9 minutes slower than previous years at Wildflower – or about 1.1 miles per hour slower over 56 miles. By comparing a handful of other competitors’ bike splits from previous years with their bike splits this year, it appears the wind was probably responsible for about 2-3 of those minutes – and my conservative pacing was responsible for the rest.

And what happened?

I proceeded to have the “run of my life” at Wildflower, and probably one of the best half-marathon performances I’ve ever put in during a Half-Ironman triathlon. My legs were turning over at a much higher cadence, I tackled every hill with much greater confidence, and I was only passed once. You’ll notice in most of the clips in the video below that I appear to be running strong.

But at the end of the day, that “fantastic” run was only about 2-3 minutes faster than what I typically run on the Wildflower long course. Granted, that’s 120% faster pace per mile on the run compared to previous years, but…

By bicycling easy, I lost 6-7 minutes on the bike, and only gained 2-3 of those minutes back by having a “better” run.

So here’s the lesson:

During a Half-Ironman triathlon, err on the side of bicycling too aggressively, and pay closer attention to your competitors – allowing their moves to dictate your pace, especially if you’re trying to podium.

As it turns out, I *did* podium, placing in the top 1% of the field, getting 4th place in my age group and also qualifying for the ITU World Championships.

But I guarantee that in Hawaii, I’ll be biking harder. ;)
