Explosive Running Drills To Make You Fly

These running drills, with coach Kerry, are a little more explosive in that there is a skipping element in them. This is valuable for creating speed as these drills will teach you to keep your foot on the ground for shorter amounts of time which will make you a faster and more efficient runner.

Do these constantly and you will notice a difference.

Free Membership For Patrick

Congrats to Patrick, who sent us a picture of himself sporting the Rock Star Jet Black Tech T-Shirt and got a free month’s membership. Here’s what Patrick said:

Hey guys,

Just got back from Ironman Florida. Went down for the weekend to volunteer and punch my ticket for next year. The picture is an overlook of the bikes the night before the race. I caught bikes in T2 all day; literally the first pro to the last AGer at 5:29:47pm. I came back later and handed out space blankets from 9 to midnight. It was a great experience seeing IM from the “other side;” gave me a much deeper appreciation for how much volunteers truly sacrifice that day. Racing’s still harder tho! :-)

Look forward to IM #4 next November.

Yours,
Patrick Allen
Smyrna, TN

An Injury Video + BONUS – This Thursday: Ben Greenfield Teaching USAT Webinar “Advanced Techniques for Faster Injury Recovery”.

When it comes to triathlon, the last thing you want to do is waste valuable training time sitting around and waiting for an injury to heal. In this video, Ben Greenfield gives a few quick techniques to make your injuries heal faster.

Click here for more information on Ben Greenfield’s upcoming USA Triathlon Webinar entitled “Advanced Techniques for Faster Injury Recovery”, which will teach the injured triathlete or triathlon coach how to go beyond the simple “ice it” principle of injury recovery, and incorporate technologies such as automated compression, nutrition supplementation, meal modification, physical therapy modalities, cold laser and other tactics used by professional sports teams, but underutilized by the general coaching and triathlete population.

The webinar is Thursday, November 4!

LIVE Triathlon Q&A Tonight at 6pm PST with Triathlon Coach Melissa Mantak Now Available For Download!

Melissa Mantak. Melissa’s history with the sport of triathlon began in 1984 when she entered her first race during college – and won. It seemed like a logical progression to enter a triathlon; after all she was competitive swimmer by age 7, a cyclist and runner by age 12 and, no surprise to friends and family, possessed a competitive streak a mile wide.

Melissa continued to race triathlons for 10 years, competing as a professional for 6 years. During that time, she achieved numerous podium finishes at the World Cup level. In 1992, she placed 3rd at the World Championships in Muskoka, Canada – capturing the overall World Cup Title. That same year she was voted Triathlete of the Year by the US Olympic Committee. In 1993 she added to this impressive list of accomplishments by winning first ITU Indoor World Championship title.

Since retiring from the sport in 1994, Melissa has gone on to earn a Masters Degree in Sport Sciences from the University of Denver. For the last 15 years she has remained very active in the fitness industry as a coach and personal trainer. Currently, she is a certified Level 3 (Elite) Coach by USA Triathlon, a Level 1 (Elite) Coach by USA Cycling and a Performance Enhancement Specialist, certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine. A strong desire to learn fuels Melissa’s passion to teach others. Melissa attends multiple continuing education coaching clinics and seminars yearly to further her education and experience to help her athletes achieve their optimum performance.

Melissa is also a published author, sports photographer and has worked in radio and television. In 2006, she was named the Director of the professional VMG Triathlon Team. And, since 2005 Melissa has been the official coach for the Tri for the Cure, an all women’s sprint triathlon. She coached the inaugural Tour of Hope, a cross country bike ride to raise awareness for clinical trials for cancer treatments in 2003.

In 2007, Melissa started working as Head Coach to the US team at select ITU World Cup races. She coached in Lisbon and Cancun in 2007. In 2008, Melissa coached at the World Cup triathlon in New Plymouth, NZL and Madrid, Spain. Acting as Head Coach at a World Cup event puts Melissa in a pool of coaches to be chosen to coach at the Olympics and Pan Am Games. In April of 2008, Melissa coached at the ITU PATCO (regional Pan Am championships) where her athletes Jillian Petersen and Matt Chrabot both WON the elite male and female races. She also worked at the Elite Development Camp held in conjunction with the race. At the Olympic Training Center, she coached for one week of a 5 week Elite Development Camp in Colorado Springs.

In 2009, Coach Melissa worked as the Head Coach/Manager of the US Team at the ITU World Championship Series Triathlon in Yokohama, JPN. Melissa also coaches USAT National Team member and 2009 National Champion, Matt Chrabot. Currently ranked 9th in the world.

Melissa started her own coaching business, The Empowered Athlete, in 2006. She has devoted herself fulltime to coaching and training athletes since 1995.

Orthotics in running shoes – What’s the true story?

Orthotics in running shoes must be one of the most controversial topics in the history of sport, so you can trust ironguides Coach Jono Rumbelow to have an opinion on that one.I’m back after a long lay-off due to a few family issues and I thought I’d come back with a bang in true Coach Jono-style.

Orthotics in running shoes must be one of the most controversial topics in the history of sport. Podiatrists say one thing, running shops another and then biomechanics specialists began adding fuel to the fire of what was right and wrong. It wasn’t long before you had a multitude of companies producing what they thought was the perfect solution to all your running or cycling problems.

Bikes Can Now Fly Free On An Airplane…Here’s How.

RusterSports – RusterSports, owned by pro triathlete TJ Tollakson, produces a bike carrying case called the Hen House that allows your bike to fly with you, checked as regular luggage! So rather than paying $100-$150 each way to take your bike to the race, your bike flies at a fraction of the cost. TJ has clear videos that show you exactly how to pack your bike, so there’s no guesswork, and pure protection for your valuable equipment. Rock Star Triathlete Academy members can use the code at the end of this post to get free shipping to anywhere in the US!

They’re flying off the shelves (no pun intended) since they pay for themselves with just 2 trips, so if it shows out of stock, TJ said to just e-mail him with the form on the website and he’ll hook you up. Read for the free code? Just keep reading…
