Hi Ben and Kerry,
Race season is in full swing, and last weekend I raced again, this time in my hometown of Calgary, Alberta.
The Chinook Triathlon Festival is an amazing event in Calgary, with both Olympic and Half Iron Distance races taking place on the same day. The day was cool but clear, and despite our typical brisk winds coming off the Rocky Mountains at this time of year, the weather was perfect for racing. The water was chilly – on par with Ironman Coeur d’Alene, and the winds made for a good headwind on the way out West and a fantastic tailwind on the way home.
I had a decent swim, a good bike and run to go under 2:30 by about a minute, which was my goal for the race. Best part was running down a fellow age grouper with 300m to go. I snapped this picture by the finish chute after the race. I’m always trying to recruit more Canadians into the Rock Star Triathlete Academy.
For the benefits of fellow Rock Stars, I’m follow the 36 week Ironman Intermediate Plan this year which has a racing block in May and June. After having done this last year, I can say from experience that there is no better way to get ready for your A race than to do a bunch of tune-up races to help you prepare. It’s a great way to practice fueling, transitions, and to meet others to train with in the future.
I race a Half Ironman next weekend, and then my racing block is done and prep time for Ironman Canada on Aug. 28th begins! Hope to see a few Rock Stars in Penticton – let me know if you’re coming up and we can meet.
